The Russian Ambassador to Afghanistan, Dmitry Zhirnov, said that as part of the confrontation against Western sanctions, both Russia and Afghanistan are abandoning the dollar in mutual transactions, and switching to national currencies (rubles and Afghanis).
“Russia and Afghanistan are subject to illegal unilateral sanctions, and abandoning the dollar is one of the options, however, Afghanistan still has to work on converting its currency,” Zhirnov said.
Zhirnov noted that economic relations between Russia and Afghanistan are “flourishing,” and at the same time, the volume of trade between the two countries is growing.
“Our exports are growing at a faster pace,” the ambassador added.
Zhirnov also explained that the geography of suppliers of domestic products to the Afghan market is now expanding: “The Krasnodar, Krasnoyarsk and Stavropol Territories, the Volgograd, Sverdlovsk, Mordovia and Tatarstan regions are being connected,” he said.
“Businessmen are trying to make payments in rubles and Afghanis,” he continued. According to him, “as for payment cards, they are almost not used in Afghanistan.”
The ambassador concluded his speech by saying: “There are practically no payment stations anywhere, even in the capital (Kabul).”
