An official source in Anbar province revealed on Wednesday details of unannounced talks during Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi’s recent visit to Saudi Arabia regarding Iraq’s joining what is described as the “Mecca Defense Alliance.”
The source told Al-Maalomah News Agency that “Saudi Arabia has unannouncedly requested Iraq to join the Mecca Defense Alliance, and the request was discussed with Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi during his recent visit to Riyadh and his meeting with senior Saudi officials,” noting that “al-Zaidi expressed his support for the Saudi request, without publicly announcing his approval, pending further study of the matter with specialists.”
The source added that “Saudi Arabia asked al-Zaydi to join the pro-coalition front and work together to end the Houthis and impose an economic blockade on Iran by closing all border crossings with Iraq.”
He stated that “the proposal to bring up Iraq’s joining the coalition came, according to him, on American orders and for what he described as transparent objectives,” emphasizing that the discussions were shrouded in secrecy, and that the delegation accompanying al-Zidi was not informed of what transpired in the meeting, after Saudi officials stipulated that the Prime Minister attend alone.
