Pelosi: Trump will not set foot in the White House again
2024/08/08
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that some Republicans told her that Democrats must defeat former President and Republican candidate Donald Trump in the presidential elections to be held next November, in order for politics to return to normal.
Pelosi spoke to reporters on Wednesday about her new book, “The Art of Power: My Story as the First Female Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.”
“How can I say this in the nicest way possible: My life’s goal is to make sure this man never sets foot in the White House again,” Pelosi said, slamming the table.
Pelosi and Trump have traded insults during the latter’s tenure, but for the former House speaker, it’s less about Biden — her friend of 40 years — and more about Trump, whom Pelosi refers to as “Bozo,” “Snake Oil Salesman,” or “Black Creature of the Lagoon.”
Pelosi joined MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell on Wednesday to discuss the attacks she’s received from the far right and her recently published book, “The Art of Power.”
“The Republican Party has been hijacked, it is now a cult, and they need to take it back because the republic needs a strong Republican Party,” Pelosi said.
Pelosi, a California Democrat, said the Republican Party had done “great things” under his leadership and supported the country, but added: “What now?” referring to Trump-era policies. “So, in any case, we have to win the election,” she said.
“Some Republicans told me, ‘You have to beat Trump in the general election because we couldn’t beat him in the primaries, and then we’ll get back to our discussion of the issues,'” Pelosi said of Trump and his running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance.
As one of the former president’s most outspoken critics while he was in office, Pelosi’s book details her experience inside the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, when Trump supporters came looking for her.
Despite reports that she led a campaign to oust President Joe Biden this fall, Pelosi has made clear that she has left the decision entirely up to the president.
Pelosi, who is considered one of the most powerful and influential Democrats in the party, said she had not communicated with Biden after the first presidential debate, the disastrous consequences of which ended with him withdrawing from the presidential nomination.
Pelosi formally endorsed Biden’s vice president, Kamala Harris, last month, stressing that she supports her “with tremendous pride and boundless optimism for the future of our country.”
