The Turkish Ministry of Defense announced on Wednesday that it had signed an agreement with Qatar, Pakistan and Indonesia, aimed at strengthening joint defense cooperation and developing military capabilities.

The ministry said in a statement carried by Reuters that the four countries signed a “Badr Memorandum of Understanding” in Doha, in a move that reflects efforts to strengthen joint cooperation and develop partnerships.

She added that the agreement “holds great military and economic importance,” noting that the memorandum of understanding aims to encourage cooperation in the field of military production, enhance the military capabilities of the four countries, and support cooperation in the areas of military technical training, research and development.

The ministry added that “by leveraging the capabilities of each country in the field of military production, this initiative will facilitate cooperation and integration, enhance defense industrial capabilities, and enable the fulfillment of the needs of allied and friendly countries.”

The ministry added that the Badr memorandum of understanding will develop relations between the four countries in the defense industries sector and enhance multilateral cooperation in a way that supports security and stability and helps achieve common goals.

Turkey possesses the second-largest army in NATO and a robust defense sector. Ankara is assisting Gulf states, including Qatar, which hosts a Turkish military base, in bolstering their defenses amid the ongoing conflict with Iran.

In August, Turkey signed the “Mecca Agreement” for joint defense with nuclear-armed Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, stipulating that an attack on one party is considered an attack on all. Ankara also maintains close ties with Indonesia, particularly in the defense sector.
