An informed source in the Maysan Council reported on Tuesday evening that orders had been issued by the federal government to close the Al-Shaib border crossing with Iran until further notice.

The source told Shafaq News Agency that “government directives came from the capital, Baghdad, to close the crossing located east of Maysan Governorate starting at six o’clock on Wednesday morning, until further notice.”

He added that the closure was “due to technical reasons,” without specifying the nature of these reasons or the duration of the closure.

Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi issued a directive on September 12 to close the border crossings with Iran, including the al-Shaib crossing, after it was proven that Tehran was involved in carrying out drone attacks targeting the East-West oil pipeline in Saudi Arabia, launched from Iraqi territory.

The source, in a statement to Shafaq News Agency, attributed the closure of these crossings to the passage of materials, weapons, and drone-making equipment from Iran towards Iraq, which were used to target Saudi factions.

He pointed out that the closure of the border crossings, specifically Shalamja, Shib and Mandali, came by a personal decision from the Prime Minister, issued from his private office. Investigation committees were formed to uncover the circumstances of the materials that were passed through and the violations by the security forces and official bodies, and to hold the parties involved accountable.
