A group of members of the House of Representatives announced on Thursday their rejection of creating the positions of deputy prime ministers or creating ministries “based on partisan quotas at a time of responsibility to rationalize spending,” as they put it.

MP Haider Al-Mutairi said during a press conference held at the parliament building with the participation of MPs from various political blocs, which was attended by a correspondent from Shafaq News Agency, that “the resources of the Iraqi people do not belong to the political blocs, and this is a pledge before God and future generations. We clearly declare that we will not vote to create positions for deputy prime ministers.”

Al-Mutairi called on members of parliament to “stand against passing these positions at the expense of the interests of the Iraqi people,” adding: “We, as members of parliament, will boycott today’s session and will not vote on the cabinet.”

The conference was attended by MP Haider Al-Mutairi, MPs from the Ishraqat Kanoun bloc, the Parliamentary Rights bloc, the Abshir Ya Iraq bloc, MPs from the Badr bloc, and independent MPs.

For his part, the head of the parliamentary rights bloc, Saud Al-Saadi, said that “there is a parliamentary will within the House of Representatives to reject partisan quotas,” indicating that “in light of the regional challenges and the political and financial crisis, it was more appropriate to take reform steps to streamline the government structure and spending.”

Al-Saadi pointed out during the press conference that “the agreement was made according to the principle of power-sharing and turning these positions into partisan power-sharing for party members.”

He concluded by saying: “We are boycotting today’s session and will not vote on the positions of deputy prime ministers and the creation of new ministries to appease politicians. This is a new culture that will turn into public attitudes in the future that will distort the political process in the future.”

The voting session to complete the government cabinet, deputy prime ministers, and newly created ministries is scheduled to begin at 7:00 PM today.

Earlier on Thursday, the House of Representatives announced the final list of candidates for ministerial and deputy prime ministerial positions, which included 16 names, among them 4 deputy prime ministers, and the others for vacant and newly created ministries.

The President of the Republic also arrived at Parliament, and the bell to start the session rang more than half an hour ago.
