The head of the Idrak parliamentary bloc, Abdul Hamza al-Khafaji, affirmed on Thursday the parliament’s determination to compel the government to officially submit its program and to hold regular sessions every six months to question and host the government before the parliament. He stressed that the current parliamentary sessions will not allow a repeat of past experiences where government programs became mere words on paper without genuine oversight.
Al-Khafaji told the Al-Maalomah news agency, “The House of Representatives is proceeding with activating its strict constitutional oversight role regarding executive performance and will not be satisfied with simply granting confidence without meticulous monitoring of implementation phases.” He explained that “parliament will require the government to submit its detailed program with specific timeframes, followed by regular sessions held every six months to hear about what has been accomplished and assess the extent of its realization on the ground.”
Al-Khafaji added that “the legislative authority is absolutely determined to break the pattern that characterized previous sessions, where ministerial programs were presented as theoretical promises and empty slogans that were shelved and became mere words on paper without any accountability mechanism or on-the-ground monitoring of their outcomes.”
The MP stressed that “the current stage, with its pressing economic and service-related challenges, necessitates linking the continued tenure of officials and ministers to their actual achievement rates,” noting that “any failure or delay in implementing the commitments outlined in the government program will be met with firm parliamentary measures, including questioning and a vote of no confidence, to ensure the government’s agenda is translated into tangible projects that serve the citizens and protect public funds.”
