Political analyst Sabah Al-Akeili explained that the American side used its pressure cards to ensure that Iraq would not leave its cloak, noting that America worked to thwart Iraq’s arms deals with Russia and China.
Al-Akeili told Al-Maalouma, “America has made the Zionist entity the greatest power in the region, and has weakened Iraq’s military capabilities, such that if Baghdad thinks of leaving the American embrace, Washington will play its cards against Iraq.”
He added, “Iraq’s money is in the US Federal Reserve, and any contracts and deals with countries that are not allies of America, Washington will work to thwart them. During Maliki’s rule, Iraq went towards contracting with Russia to obtain weapons in a deal worth 11 billion dollars, but America prevented that and thwarted this deal.”
He explained that “former Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi went to China to conclude an oil-for-reconstruction agreement, and part of this understanding is to support and develop the Iraqi military and air force, but America worked to bring down Abdul Mahdi’s government. In addition, Trump has stated in recent years that America will not let Iraq go outside the American framework.”
