On Thursday, legal expert Ali Jaber Al-Tamimi explained the most prominent penalties that ambassadors inside Iraq may receive in the event that they violate the law, and the parties that activate the procedures against them.
Al-Tamimi said, in a statement to Al-Maalouma, that “Foreign Service Law No. 45 of 2008 authorized the accountability of the ambassador for his actions that affect the country’s reputation.”
He added, “The ambassador’s actions, and in the event that they affect the country’s reputation or violate its laws, an investigative committee is formed by a decision of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and headed by the deputy minister, the director of the legal department and one of the ambassadors in accordance with Articles 38 and 39 of the above law, as the committee, and if it finds what constitutes a crime, it refers file to court.
And he indicated that “the foreign minister has the right to propose, based on the committee’s report, that the prime minister replace the ambassador or relieve him from the position, by voting in the cabinet and voting in the parliament, according to Articles 80 and 81 of the Iraqi constitution.”
