Shafaq News/ The Prime Minister, Muhammad Shia’ al-Sudani, said, on Thursday, that within a period of no more than three years, Iraq will be able to achieve its independence in energy and depend on its gas production to provide energy.
Al-Sudani’s speech was delivered during the opening ceremony of two installed units at the Amarah gas power station in Maysan Governorate, which he arrived this morning.
Al-Sudani said, “This project will supply the system with a new capacity of 250 megawatts.”
He added that these strategic projects will contribute to reducing operational budget spending, especially with regard to importing gas, which have been ongoing since 2019, and come within the government’s direction to complete stalled and lagging projects.
Al-Sudani also indicated that the direction of the government and the Ministry of Electricity, during the last stage, focused on implementing combined-cycle projects. The first phase was signed to produce approximately 1,140 megawatts of electric power. Until the total power reaches 4,000 megawatts, it will be implemented without the need for additional fuel.
And the Prime Minister indicated that the government is continuing on more than one level to improve the reality of the electricity system, stressing that all the problems and crises that the electricity system was exposed to are outside the control of the ministry, due to the problem of importing gas, which the government addressed through decisions taken for the first time, as the issue of paying was resolved. The dues are through bartering in crude and black oil with neighboring Iran, which supplies Iranian gas to operate the stations.
He also referred to future and permanent solutions to invest in gas that is burned and not invested, through a total contract or the fifth round or contracts that are expected to be signed soon, and Iraq will be facing an important entitlement, which is the absence of the need for imported gas within a period not exceeding 3 years once these projects are completed. , which will also provide energy independence and gas dependence for Iraq.
