Iraq achieves self-sufficiency by marketing wheat locally and expects a qualitative boom in production next year

Shafaq News/ The Minister of Trade, Atheer Al-Ghurairy announced today, Saturday, that the locally marketed quantities of wheat crop for the year 2023 amounted to 5 million and 194 thousand tons, describing this quantity as the “highest” in the history of wheat cultivation in Iraq.
This came in a speech he delivered on behalf of the Prime Minister, Muhammad Shia’ al-Sudani, during the conference organized by the General Company for Grain Trade under the slogan “The Season of Goodness and Success, We Have Achieved Self-Sufficiency.”
Al-Ghurairy said in the speech that his ministry “was able to absorb large quantities of wheat during the marketing season, and also succeeded in preventing the smuggling of quantities of wheat to and from the governorates, in cooperation with the security services that had an effective role in this aspect and in coordination with our monitoring agencies in all governorates of the country.”
He expected that next year would witness a quantum leap in production and quality in light of government plans to use modern agricultural and irrigation methods and other supportive measures to increase the cultivated areas.
