Member of Parliament Mohammed Abu Al-Eis addressed a strongly worded letter to Prime Minister Ali Al-Zaidi on Thursday, demanding the swift submission of the salary scale law to Parliament for a vote. He emphasized that the law remains stalled within government offices despite the suffering of employees and those with limited incomes.
Abu Al-Eis told the Information Agency, “Members of Parliament find it extremely difficult to meet with the Prime Minister due to his busy schedule and frequent foreign travel, which has compelled us to convey the voice of the citizens through the media.” He added, “There are crucial laws awaited by the Iraqi public that remain unresolved on the shelves of the Prime Minister’s office.”
He further stated that “the salary scale law represents a widespread public demand and is key to achieving social justice among state employees, especially given the continuous decline in the value of the Iraqi dinar, the waves of inflation, and the greed of merchants that are devastating vulnerable segments of society.” He pointed out that “poverty is now threatening the psychological and economic collapse of a large segment of those with limited incomes.”
Abu al-Abbas al-Zaydi addressed the officials, saying, “Would those in the three presidencies, ministries, and special grades accept or be content for their children to live on a monthly or weekly allowance of 170,000 dinars? So why do we accept and impose this meager amount on sanitation workers, municipal employees, and lower-ranking civil servants?”
He emphasized that “the legitimacy of officials and their attainment of their positions came from the vote of this ordinary citizen, and their legitimate demands cannot be ignored.” He called on the Prime Minister to “set aside his other commitments and immediately refer the law to Parliament to ensure justice for the working class, in conjunction with other entitlements related to honoring the sacrifices of the martyrs and freedom fighters, whose sacrifices no one can deny.”
