The Ministry of Transport announced on Saturday that there is a trend towards manufacturing boats of various sizes and specifications, as well as opening new production lines. The ministry stated in a statement that “Iraqi ports seek, through the development of the shipyard, to meet the needs of its maritime fleet and reduce dependence on foreign shipyards, in order to attract foreign ships and provide maintenance services for them and work to meet the requirements of international classification societies,” noting that “this trend comes in implementation of the directives of the Minister of Transport, Wahab Al-Hassani, to enhance technical capabilities, develop maritime infrastructure, and rely on national capabilities in this sector.”
She added that “the General Company for Iraqi Ports discussed, during an extensive meeting with a delegation from the Military Industrialization Authority, ways to develop its national capabilities in the field of maritime industries and enhance its capabilities in building, manufacturing, repairing and maintaining ships, boats and marine units, within its direction to localize these industries and services inside Iraq.”
She also noted that “the delegation of the Military Industrialization Authority presented the capabilities of the boat factory, its production lines, and the available capabilities for manufacturing boats of various sizes and specifications, while the needs of the company’s technical and operational departments were discussed, as well as the possibility of utilizing national capabilities to secure its requirements.”
The meeting also stressed, according to the statement, “the importance of transferring technology and expertise and developing and qualifying Iraqi personnel through training and specialization programs in order to contribute to building a national technical and engineering base capable of developing maritime industries with high efficiency.”
