MP Mohammed al-Moussawi, a member of the Coordination Framework, affirmed on Tuesday that protecting public funds and confronting financial and administrative corruption requires decisive measures to prosecute those involved and recover stolen funds. He stressed the necessity of strictly enforcing the “Where did you get this?” law.
In a statement to the Information Agency, al-Moussawi said, “Combating corruption can no longer tolerate hesitation or political favoritism. Rather, it requires opening serious cases and prosecuting all those who have misappropriated public funds, regardless of party affiliations or executive positions.”
He added that “the ‘Where Did You Get This?’ law represents an important legal tool for uncovering illicit wealth accumulation and holding officials accountable for the sources of their funds,” noting that the public is awaiting concrete measures to end impunity and strengthen citizens’ trust in state institutions.
Al-Moussawi continued, “Addressing the economic, social, and service crises begins with drying up the sources of illicit gains and reducing financial waste,” calling on the government and parliament to “support oversight and judicial bodies and empower them to perform their duties in prosecuting those involved in corruption.”
Earlier, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) indicated that Iraq loses approximately 20% of its public funds annually due to administrative and financial corruption, explaining that the amount of wasted money is equivalent to the cost of building 20 modern central hospitals or constructing 3,000 model schools, in addition to funding sustainable energy projects.
