President Nizar Amidi condemned on Saturday the attacks targeting Saudi Arabia, stressing that Iraq does not accept the use of its territory or airspace as a launching pad for attacks on neighboring countries.
Amidi said in a statement, which was received by Shafaq News Agency, that “protecting Iraq’s sovereignty and maintaining its relations with its regional environment is the responsibility of the state and its constitutional institutions.”
He affirmed his support for the measures taken by the government in the aftermath of the attacks, stressing the need to continue investigations and take all legal measures against anyone proven to be involved or responsible, in order to ensure that such attacks are not repeated.
The President of the Republic pointed out Iraq’s keenness on its relations with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and all neighboring countries, and on consolidating security and stability and protecting the interests of the peoples of the region, far from any practices that would endanger these relations or harm Iraq’s security and stability.
This stance comes after Saudi Arabia announced that the “East-West” pipeline in the Riyadh and Medina regions was attacked by drones coming from Iraq, resulting in human casualties and material damage.
Riyadh said it chose not to respond at this stage, at the request of Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zubaidi, to give Baghdad an opportunity to take the necessary measures, while affirming its right to protect its sovereignty, security and facilities.
Al-Zaydi had ordered the dismissal of the commander of the Maysan operations from his position and the formation of an investigative council regarding the operations command, after it was proven that the attacks were launched from one of the sites inside the governorate.
