A senior security official, revealed a new government plan to deal with the ongoing popular demonstrations in the capital Baghdad.
The Reuters news agency quoted the official, who was not named, as saying that “there are new tactics have been approved in an attempt to restrict the demonstrations in Tahrir Square in the capital Baghdad.”
Tahrir Square is a crossroads that leads directly to a bridge over the Tigris River, where protesters have been protesting for weeks.
“The security forces received new orders last Saturday that the demonstrators should be kept inside Tahrir Square,” the security official said.
“The security forces are working quietly to tighten the cordon on the scene and from all directions.”
“A campaign of arrests is expected to follow, in an attempt to limit the momentum of the protests.”
