BAGHDAD (Reuters) – Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi vowed on Wednesday night to reveal what he called “the most corrupt in Iraq.”

Abdul-Mahdi said in a speech to the Iraqi people: “We will issue a list of names of the top corrupt people who were convicted hours later,” noting that “several decisions will be issued later in a campaign against corruption in Iraq.”

He also revealed the issuance of a decision to release all detainees from the demonstrators unconditionally, stressing that it “directed not to use live bullets and violence against demonstrators.”

Speaking about the anti-government protests, the Iraqi prime minister said: “We went through a week when the country faced political and social challenges.”

Adel Abdul-Mahdi said that these popular protests “were the beginning of the process of reform in Iraq,” stressing “his rejection of the burning and aggression that do not belong to the Iraqis,” he said.

He explained that “an investigation has been opened into the recent events, as the family of each dead and wounded, and the release of all detainees detained juveniles,” noting that “no family will remain without monthly income”.

He said he would ask parliament on Thursday to approve a cabinet reshuffle.

Abdul-Mahdi said he would present the new cabinet to parliament next week for approval.

The measure is the latest in an effort to calm protesters who have called for a week of bloody protests to leave the government and the political elite they see as corrupt.

At the end of his speech, the Iraqi prime minister said that he “will announce next week the committee demanded by the Shiite cleric Ali al-Sistani last Friday, to fight corruption and the implementation of reform.”
