A member of the State of Law coalition, Imran Karkush, said today, Wednesday, that the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives will remain suspended until after the legislative recess.

Karkush said in a statement to the Maalouma Agency, “The Sunni disputes regarding obtaining the position have become more complex, which has necessitated holding a session to elect a president for the Council,” noting that “the legislative term will end with the extension on the ninth of next month.”

He continued, “Sunni divisions cast their shadow over the Kurdish and Shiite blocs, which led to their division and the division of their votes,” stressing that “the votes were divided in Saturday’s session within one component and one coalition.”

It is noteworthy that the House of Representatives was forced to extend the legislative term for thirty days in order to resolve the issue of the presidency of the Council, but they did not succeed in Saturday’s session, and there are only 11 days left for the end of the legislative term.

Political affairs specialists believe that the position of Speaker of Parliament will remain vacant until the end of the current legislative session, stressing that Al-Mandalawi is doing well in managing the Council, but the position is a Sunni entitlement and they must agree on a compromise candidate in order to obtain the position.
