Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) member Burhan Sheikh Raouf confirmed that the Kurdistan Region will not stand in the way of passing the oil and gas law in parliament, noting that the law could be passed by relying on the parliamentary majority held by certain parties.
Sheikh Raouf told Al-Maalouma, “The oil and gas law was supposed to be enacted in 2007. There is a draft of this law in the halls of Parliament, but it has not been enacted to this day.”
He added, “The Kurdistan Region did not obstruct or hinder the passage of the aforementioned law, as political differences between the blocs and parties in power were behind the obstruction of its passage at the time.”
He explained that “the political forces have a majority of seats in the House of Representatives and can work to pass the law if they so wish. Therefore, it is incorrect for the region to obstruct the enactment of the oil and gas law in light of the presence of a parliamentary majority capable of passing the law.”
