The US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, the head of the caretaker government, Adel Abdul Mahdi, and the President of the Republic, Barham Salih, has informed that the United States will protect its citizens in Iraq.
In a statement released on Tuesday, US State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagos said that Pompeo had two separate phone calls to Abdul-Mahdi and Saleh, “where he clearly stressed that the United States will protect its citizens in Iraq to support its sovereignty and independence and will defend them.”
Ortagos added that both Abdul-Mahdi and Saleh assured Pompeo that “they will seriously deal with their responsibility and guarantee the security and protection of American cadres and their properties in Iraq.
These phone conversations came after they erupted in front of the US embassy in Iraq, since Tuesday morning, mass demonstrations taking place against the strikes.” Last Sunday, the United States directed it to sites of the “Hezbollah Brigades” in border lands of Iraq and Syria, and resulted in the death of at least 25 people.
The US President, Donald Trump, accused Iran of being behind the “attack” on the embassy, threatening the Islamic Republic Take “full responsibility” for these events.
