Member of the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee, Ali Al-Bandawi, confirmed today, Sunday, that the Security Committee is following up on the file of arming the Iraqi army, indicating that Iraq intends to contract with well-known international companies to supply the army with advanced weapons.
Al-Bandawi said in a statement to Al-Maalouma Agency, “The United States does not want Iraq to possess advanced weapons for long-term strategic purposes, which hinders Iraq’s ability to fully develop its defensive capabilities,” calling for “the necessity of diversifying the sources of arming the security forces through cooperation with other countries and international companies specialized in providing modern and advanced technologies.”
He considered that “the armament file is one of the priorities for the security services,” noting that “many countries are seeking to strengthen their relations with Iraq by opening outlets to purchase weapons and supply the country with what it needs, instead of relying completely on the United States in this area.”
It is worth noting that the United States of America had for many years obstructed Iraq’s ability to possess advanced air defense systems, as part of a policy of keeping its defense capabilities weak in the face of threats coming from beyond the borders.
