Shafaq News/ A number of members of the Iraqi Council of Representatives protested, on Tuesday, against the voting mechanism within the council that led to the passing of the three “controversial” laws.
Independent MP Saad Al-Tubi told Shafaq News Agency that today’s session was “politically capricious” and that voting on the three laws in one basket was “against the law.”
Al-Tubi explained that “the number of voters on the three controversial laws was below the legal quorum, but the council presidency was in a hurry to announce the vote.”
He pointed out that “the council members protested this and collected more than 50 signatures to dismiss the council’s chairman, Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani, from his position.”
For his part, MP Youssef Al-Kalabi said during a press conference held at the parliament building, attended by Shafaq News Agency correspondent, that “in a dangerous precedent, the parliament voted on three controversial laws in total,” considering at the same time that “the personal status law is not controversial, but its placement with the law to release corrupt people, thieves and terrorists from prisons, we will not allow this,” referring to the general amnesty law.
Al-Kalabi considered that “the vote is invalid and illegal, and we will go to court to challenge today’s session, and we will not accept that a member of the House of Representatives kneels to the presidency of the council and the political blocs,” as he described it.
In turn, MP Raed Al-Maliki said during a press conference held in the parliament building with the participation of MPs from different political blocs, attended by a Shafaq News Agency correspondent, that “what happened today is a dangerous precedent, and is contrary to the context of voting on laws, and we have demanded on more than one occasion to separate the laws from each other and not to take away the will of the MP.”
He added, “The Presidency of the House of Representatives committed a violation by skipping the paragraph on voting on laws, and the members of the House objected to moving from one paragraph to another, and what happened was a quorum defect, as the legal quorum was not achieved to vote on the laws due to the MPs’ objection to the general amnesty law.”
He continued, “The Presidency of the Council of Representatives announced voting on three laws in one basket, and this is not true, and we object to that,” indicating that “the objection is not to the amnesty law or the return of properties to their owners in general, but there are paragraphs that have comments and we do not want to confuse Iraqi society.”
He pointed out that “the members of the House of Representatives will go to appeal in today’s session before the Federal Court.”
In the same context, MP Yasser Al-Husseini said sarcastically: “We congratulate the major corrupt people for being included in the general amnesty,” considering that “what happened today is an invalid vote.”
He added, “This law will cause confusion in the street, so we will go to the Federal Court to challenge the law.”
