Foreign Ministry Spokesman Dr. Ahmad Al-Sahaf said that Iraq will be an observer in the Human Rights Council early next year, and work will continue on what our country deserves.

Al-Sahaf said in a statement that “the ministry will work to renew Iraq’s membership in the Human Rights Council in the future.”

Following is the text of the press release:

Iraq is currently a member of the Human Rights Council of the United Nations General Assembly from 2017 to the end of 2019, and we have had an active and active role in it, and we worked hard to keep the Council’s resolutions and actions from politicization.

As far as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is concerned with mobilizing international support to vote for the renewal of Iraq’s membership in the Council for another two years, we would like to assure everyone that the Ministry has actively sought this support, and has made considerable efforts until the last hours, and has succeeded in securing promises from 130 of them It has already won 121 votes, two votes short of qualification, but some of them did not keep their promises and refrained from voting for us because of Iraq’s principled regional and international positions and its consistent approach to some political events. Security, which did not seem to be in line with the policies of some countries, did not vote for us.

In this context, we affirm that Iraq will be an observer in the Human Rights Council at the beginning of next year, and work will continue on what our country deserves and befits it.
