BAGHDAD (AFP) – The Foreign Relations Committee criticized the undeclared visit of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to the capital Baghdad on Tuesday evening, which lasted only four hours.
Talabani said in a press statement that “Iraq welcomes any visit to any foreign official, but the visits must be announced and not always announced or not disclosed until after the end.”
And stressed the need to deal with US-Iranian tension “in order to preserve the sovereignty of the country, without being in the axis without another axis.”
Pompeo had held meetings in Berlin and visited Baghdad for four hours on Tuesday night, during which he met with President Barham Salih and Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi in the presence of Foreign Minister Mohammad Ali al-Hakim.
“The United States is an important strategic partner for Iraq, and Iraq continues its balanced policy that builds bridges of friendship and cooperation with all friends and neighbors, including neighboring Iran,” the prime minister said during the meeting with Pompio.
“It is important to resolve all differences through honest and constructive dialogue,” he said.
For his part, said Pompeo, according to the statement of the Prime Minister, “understand the positions of Iraq on the issues at hand.”
