Shafaq News/ The US Treasury Department announced on Sunday that two Arab countries were among the largest foreign holders of US bonds for 2025, while Iraq dropped from the list for the second year.
The Treasury said in its latest 2025 schedule, which Shafaq News Agency reviewed, that “Saudi Arabia and the UAE were among the top 20 countries holding US bonds in 2025,” indicating that “Saudi Arabia ranked 17th among countries holding $126.4 billion in US bonds, while the UAE ranked 19th with $119.9 billion.”
She added, “Japan topped the list of countries holding the largest amount of these bonds, with $1.126 trillion, followed by China in second place with $784 billion, the United Kingdom in third place with $750 billion, the Cayman Islands in fifth place with $417 billion, Luxembourg in fifth place with $424 billion, Canada in sixth place with $406 billion.”
She pointed out that “Iraq was not among the 20 largest holders of US bonds, despite its presence in 2023 with holdings of $32.6 billion.”
She explained that “the total global bonds issued this year amounted to $8 trillion and 817 billion.”
US bonds are a type of debt instrument issued by the US government to raise funds, and many countries buy them as a safe investment .
In recent years, many Arab and foreign countries, including Iraq, held large amounts of these bonds. Over time, Iraq’s holdings of US bonds dwindled until it dropped out of the top 20 countries holding these bonds.
