The commander of the US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Friday that US forces had removed Iranian mines from the Strait of Hormuz, stressing that the forces remain vigilant to ensure freedom of navigation in the waterway.
The commander of CENTCOM said in a statement seen by Shafaq News Agency that he visited US forces in the Middle East this week and saw oil tankers crossing the Strait of Hormuz.
He added that Iranian Revolutionary Guard forces are no longer present in the Strait, after having monitored it for decades, noting that US forces continue to monitor the waterway and ensure freedom of navigation through it.
He went on to say that the United States has helped its Gulf partners move more than 1.5 billion barrels of oil since the summer.
Earlier on Friday, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy confirmed that two oil tankers had been involved in an accident and had stopped in the waters south of the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard announced on Thursday that at least four tankers caught fire after hitting mines while trying to cross the Strait of Hormuz, a day after the US military confirmed it had cleared mines from the main roads in the waterway.
