The former member of the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture and Water ,
Thaer al-Jubouri, confirmed on Friday that agricultural production costs in Iraq have increased by 15 to 20 percent following the rise in the dollar exchange rate, noting that this will place a heavy burden on farmers in the country.
Speaking to Al-Maalomah, al-Jubouri explained that “the agricultural sector in Iraq has faced accumulated challenges over many years, particularly the very high rates of production costs.”
He pointed out that “after the dollar exchange rate increase, these costs have risen by 15 to 20 percent, thus creating financial burdens, especially with the increased prices of fertilizers and fuel, in addition to other production inputs.”
Al-Jubouri indicated that “these increases reduce the balance between costs and profitability, pushing many farmers to the risk of losses, which is driving some of them to abandon the profession of their fathers and grandfathers.”
He emphasized that “supporting the agricultural sector is a vital part of food security, and therefore the state must double its support for the agricultural sector, especially since it is an important and strategic sector in light of regional tensions.”
He stressed “the need to maintain agricultural production levels to meet market demands and prevent price increases,” noting that “the agricultural sector requires a comprehensive review through the development of support mechanisms and efforts to reduce production costs.”
