An informed source revealed on Saturday that the Iraqi government has decided not to submit a draft general budget law for the current year, preferring to limit itself to operational expenditures.
The source told Al Furat News, “The government believes there is currently no need to prepare or send budget schedules, due to the lack of funds to pay the accumulated dues,” suggesting that “operational funding will continue to be used only to secure salaries and basic expenses.”
The source noted that “among the reasons for postponing the budget submission are the government’s fears that it will be politically exploited by certain parties as the election approaches,” stressing that “there is a fear that blocs and parties will withdraw the budget and exploit it for electoral purposes.”
He explained that “the government will be content with providing approximately 3 trillion dinars to cover operational expenditures during the coming period, without proceeding with the new budget procedures at this time.”
