Parliamentary Services Committee member Baqir al-Saadi revealed on Wednesday a government plan to localize the solar panel industry in five Iraqi governorates, including the capital, Baghdad, as part of a strategy to promote reliance on clean energy.

Al-Saadi told Al-Maalouma that “the government’s efforts to formulate a clean energy strategy to provide electricity to Iraqi cities, towns, and rural areas are continuing to be implemented through the relevant ministerial bodies.” He explained that “one of the important axes of this strategy is the effort to localize the solar panel industry in five Iraqi governorates, through coordination with international companies, in addition to developing local capabilities and competencies, which contributes to achieving greater flexibility in reducing prices, as well as ensuring the sustainability of the provision of spare parts and raw materials.”

He added that “localizing the solar panel industry, using the latest technologies adopted by major international companies, will have a positive impact in providing systems at reasonable prices, in addition to improving the quality of the raw materials used,” noting that “this step will open new horizons for developing the renewable energy sector in Iraq in the coming period.”

It’s worth noting that Iraq announced months ago that it would proceed with implementing a clean energy strategy, as part of its efforts to reduce the electricity production deficit and adopt environmentally friendly approaches.
