He added, “The meeting today is for the purpose of the project’s idea, with the development of plans and introducing countries to this project, and after that we leave the choice to these countries to discuss the issue,” noting that “the Prime Minister spoke about the project file with the leaders of neighboring brotherly countries, Iraq and the Gulf states.”
The spokesman explained that “after this conference, there will be specialized Iraqi committees and also in countries that wish to contribute to the project,” noting that “the most important event today is that it is international, meaning that Iraq as a country, and that the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Transport have invited countries and not companies.” And these countries sent their representatives to see and ask, and after that they study and decide to participate.
Al-Awadi continued, “The second step in the project is to move to financing details, delivery methods, and completion periods. The development road is a strategic project, and it is an Iraqi road, but it is related to the region, and it will transfer the goods of all countries in the region, from Europe to Turkey to the Gulf, and in return, transfer Gulf goods and Gulf resources from Gulf through Iraq to Turkey.
And Al-Awadi indicated that “the most important thing that we must focus on is that Iraq does not want this road to be just a transit road, as the Iraqi government wants to turn this land line and railways into a vital artery for the economy,” noting that “there are plans for industrial cities and residential cities surrounding On the way, with thousands of trucks coming from 25 European countries heading towards the Gulf, and the goods that come from China, India and America, which are unloaded in the Gulf ports, then they are packed in trucks and transported to the port of Al-Faw and then moved through Iraq.
He pointed out that “Iraq needs tourist infrastructure such as restaurants, hotels, cafes and parking garages, and therefore this road will turn into an economic artery serving Iraq and the countries of the region,” noting that “the project’s work period will start from the beginning of the year 2024 and end in the year 2028 with a completion period.” Record, and the financial cost of the project amounts to 17 billion dollars, including 10.5 billion dollars allocated for the construction of a completely new railway from Al-Faw to Fishkhabour, and 6.5 billion dollars will be allocated to the land route.
Today, Saturday, the Iraqi Minister of Transport, Razzaq Mohibis, considered the development road project in the interest of all countries in the region, not just his country, while he announced that the first phase of operating the large port of Faw will start in the year 2025.
Today, Saturday, Prime Minister Muhammad Shayaa al-Sudani considered that the “dry canal” development road project that connects Iraq with Europe via Turkey will be a “pillar” for a sustainable economy, revealing at the same time the government’s intention to build a smart industrial city with the port of Faw.
The Prime Minister described the path of development as an economic artery and a promising opportunity for a meeting of interests, history and cultures.
Al-Sudani had stated in a joint press conference he held with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, during an official visit he made to Ankara last March, that the development road project and the dry canal were not for Iraq and Turkey, but for the region and the world, linking the East with the West. It is the global corridor for the transportation of goods and energy.
He stated at the time, “This project was a subject of continuous discussion between Iraq and Turkey, and today we invite the brothers in the region to hold a meeting in Baghdad to discuss the stages of implementing the vital project, as Iraq possesses a huge wealth of gas and can export it within years.”
