On Thursday (30 January 2020), member of the “Al-Fateh” coalition, MP Karim Alaiwi, revealed two candidates for the post of prime minister, who said that the competition for the post will diminish between them, expecting that the decision will be resolved next Saturday.

Aliwi said in an interview with (Baghdad Today), that “the competition for the position of Prime Minister has now receded between two personalities, Ali Shukri and Muhammad Tawfiq Allawi,” noting that “agreement on either of them will take place during the coming period between political forces, and Saturday will be the last deadline For a discount. ”

He added, “Any person who will be chosen for the position of prime minister must have an agreement between the political forces, especially the Al-Fateh and other blocs, in addition to the opinion of the Iraqi street.”

On Wednesday (January 29, 2020), President of the Republic Barham Saleh sent a message to the political forces regarding the appointment of the new prime minister, threatening them with naming who he deems appropriate for the post, within the limits of next Saturday, if the forces did not reach a new candidate.

The House of Representatives (December 1, 2019) voted on the resignation of Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi from his position, while the constitution provides for the nomination of his replacement within 15 days, and then the formation of the government within a period not exceeding 30 days, and both constitutional times ended since mid-January the past.

The President of the Republic, Barham Saleh, refused, earlier, to name the candidate of the Construction Alliance Asaad Al-Eidani as head of the new government, and to assign him to form it, after the demonstrations and reference in Najaf set specific specifications for the candidate, which Saleh considered did not apply to Al-Aidani.
