Laith Kubba, adviser to Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi, said on Saturday that the latter will head a transitional government in light of the escalation of protests, while noting that all attempts to contain the demonstrations failed.
“I think the pressure has escalated,” Kubba told reporters. “Now it is about defining the details. I think in the end he will take over a transition,” he said.
He added, “Abdul Mahdi came to power a year ago because the Shiites were unable to agree among themselves on who should run the country so they found a compromise alternative, the current prime minister,” noting that “what happened now that these young protesters are not part of any A political party or group whose demands are so simple they are shaking this balance and attempts to contain the demonstrations have failed.
“Demonstrators’ demands have shifted from mere jobs and improved conditions to a change of government and prime minister,” Kubba said. “Demonstrators are now rushing more and looking at election laws and even looking for foreign influence in the country.”
