An informed source revealed Friday that the US delegation, which visited the Kurdistan region yesterday, explicitly asked Kurdish leaders to stop dealing with Iran.

The source said in an interview with (Baghdad today), “The delegation carried the message of US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to the leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party Massoud Barzani and leaders of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, including Kosrat Rasul and Qubad Talabani.”

He added that “the message was that the Kurds should determine their position and stop dealing with Iran commercially and politically because it would harm their interests, especially as the United States is supporting the Peshmerga militarily and financially.”

He pointed out that “the Kurdish leaders have become an embarrassing task, especially as Iran is penetrating significantly and has wide influence, specifically in the areas of control of the Patriotic Union of Sulaymaniyah and Halabja.”

The deputy prime minister of the Kurdistan region, Qubad Talabani, had discussed with a delegation from the US State Department, the formation of the new government of the region, relations between Kurdistan and Baghdad.

The media office of Talabani said in a statement Friday (May 10, 2019), that the latter “announced to the US delegation full support to accelerate the formation of the new government of the Kurdistan region,” noting that “the US delegation led by David Satterfield Assistant US Secretary of State for the Middle East.”

“The US delegation supports the strengthening of relations between Kurdistan and Baghdad and the development and improvement,” the statement said, adding that “the meeting was attended by Joe Hood, who is based on the work of the US Embassy in Iraq, General Paul Lakamira, commander of coalition forces in Iraq and Syria, and Steven Vigan, US Consul General in the Kurdistan Region” .
