The US State Department said that granting Iraq an exception to the sanctions against Iran required the latter to apply Washington’s sixth condition for full abolition of sanctions.

“The Iranian regime must respect the sovereignty of the Iraqi government and allow the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration of sectarian militias in exchange for an exception that enables them to communicate politically and economically with the Iraqi government,” US State Department spokeswoman Heather Neuert said at a news conference on Friday (November 16, 2018). And the latter can continue its relations with Tehran in this aspect. ”

In response to reports that Washington intended to exclude Iraq entirely from the application of these sanctions without this condition, Noiret said, “nothing has changed in terms of our position” of the conditions, especially the condition concerning the pro-Tehran Shiite factions.

The United States has set 12 conditions on Iran to lift the sanctions, which came into force earlier this month.

The conditions are based on the nuclear program, the suspension of all uranium enrichment activities, the end of the deployment of ballistic missiles, the release of US citizens in Iran and the end of support for armed groups in the Middle East, including the Lebanese Hezbollah and the Palestinian factions.
