President Saleh talks about the status of Kirkuk on his first visit to northern IraqThe President of the Republic Barham Saleh, on Saturday, the reasons for his visit to the Kurdistan Region, pointing to the need to resolve the issue of Kirkuk and disputed areas according to the Iraqi constitution.

Saleh said in a joint press conference with Governor of Sulaymaniyah Haval Abu Bakr, “I came to the Kurdistan region to see several things, including reassuring the owners of shops burned in one of the markets of the city of Arbil,” adding that “there is no doubt that the Kurdistan Regional Government will help them.”

“We hope that the firing of firecrackers will be completed at the wedding,” he said, adding “condolences to the families of the victims of the recent shooting in Sulaymaniyah.”

Saleh said “there is hope to finish the subject of forming a new government in Iraq, which is hoped to be completed next week under the chairmanship of Adel Abdul Mahdi.”

He added that “there are many issues facing the new Iraqi government, including outstanding issues between Baghdad and Erbil,” stressing that “the need to resolve these issues through the Constitution, and as President of the Republic, my task is to protect the Iraqi constitution.”

Saleh stressed that “the current situation of Kirkuk is illegal, so things should be resolved and make the status of the province legal,” adding that “this solution must be made in accordance with the will of the people of Kirkuk, who were greatly affected by political differences.”
