Saad al-Hadithi, spokesman for Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, confirmed that the Iraqi parliament has the right to request the departure of foreign troops from the country, but we still need those forces, as he put it.
Al-Hadithi said in a press statement that “Parliament has the right to request the departure of foreign troops from Iraq, especially after the defeat of Badash.”
“The Iraqi government still needs assistance from foreign forces in terms of training and other logistical matters, especially with regard to Syria, where terrorists continue to pose a threat to Iraq,” he said.
“It may be possible to change the number of foreign troops in the country, with the path towards greater stability,” al-Hadithi said.
The parliament voted yesterday to “thank and appreciate” all the forces of the countries that stood with Iraq to fight Daqash, and call on the government to set a timetable for the departure of these forces in Iraqi territory.
