Shafaq News – Washington
The US State Department announced on Saturday that it has declared the Lebanese consul in Michigan, Ibrahim Sharara, persona non grata, demanding that he leave the United States by November 8, due to posts attributed to him related to Hezbollah.
Media reports stated that the posts attributed to Sharara included praise for an attack targeting US Marines in Beirut in 1983. The Washington Free Beacon, in an investigation published on November 2, accused him of praising the attack, based on a post from 2021 in which he said that the “heroic resistance” ended the “American military occupation” of Lebanon with one blow.
This move comes after reports published by the same website that covered Sharara’s participation in an event for the Arab American community in Michigan, in support of Congressman Abdul El-Sayed and a number of Democratic candidates, on the eve of the US Senate elections.
The website had launched an attack on the Lebanese consul for attending the event last week, and republished statements attributed to him regarding the attack that targeted US forces in Beirut.
On October 23, 1983, the Lebanese capital, Beirut, witnessed the bombing of two car bombs that targeted two buildings that housed American and French soldiers within the multinational force in Lebanon. The attack resulted in the death of 307 people, including 241 American soldiers and 58 French soldiers, in addition to six civilians and two attackers.
