Iranian negotiators left the Qatari capital, Doha, following talks with Qatari mediators on reaching an agreement to end the war between Iran and the United States, coinciding with the circulation of a draft proposed agreement, amid talk of the possibility of holding a meeting to follow up on the negotiations.
Reuters quoted an informed official on Monday as saying that the Iranian delegation’s departure on Sunday was not due to difficulties encountered during the talks, explaining that a draft agreement proposal is currently being circulated, without disclosing its details.
In this context, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei said that the basis of the talks is a seven-step plan that Tehran put forward last September, which aims to open the Strait of Hormuz and end the US naval blockade imposed on Iran, noting that his country sees the possibility of implementing the plan within a faster timetable if an agreement is reached.
He added that Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi was in Doha to facilitate the exchange of messages with Washington through Qatari intermediaries, stressing that the Iranian demands were presented “with complete clarity and transparency,” and that they were demands he described as reasonable and logical.
Baqaei stressed that any final agreement, as well as the opening and securing of the Strait of Hormuz, will not be possible unless the American naval blockade ends and Iran’s legitimate demands and needs are met.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi had indicated last Saturday the possibility of opening the Strait of Hormuz within two days instead of the seven days included in the original plan, while US President Donald Trump had previously rejected the initial Iranian proposal.
These diplomatic moves come amid fears of renewed military escalation following the conclusion of the US midterm congressional elections, which begin tomorrow, Tuesday.
