MP Youssef Al-Kalabi responded on Tuesday evening to the Reconstruction and Development bloc after he was referred to the parliamentary conduct committee at the request of the bloc, following a statement he made about the head of the Reconstruction and Development Alliance, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, which they considered “offensive,” demanding that Al-Sudani, in his capacity as the former Prime Minister, be hosted under the dome of Parliament to explain “how he drowned Iraq in debt.”
Al-Kalabi said in a video clip followed by Shafaq News Agency: “When I carry out my parliamentary work and say that the former Prime Minister should be held accountable because the three-year budget in his government was supposed to produce an urban renaissance, but it was absent for a year and a half, and then it became clear that Iraq has debts amounting to 208 trillion dinars, and because of this statement, I am referred to the Parliamentary Conduct Committee.”
He added that “there are many files on the Sudanese government, including exceptions, investments, debts, and exploiting his position in the elections,” stressing: “I did not talk about the Reconstruction and Development bloc or its deputies, but about its head in his capacity as the former prime minister.”
Al-Kalabi continued: “We will submit a request to the Speaker of Parliament and his deputies to allocate a public session in the presence of former Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, to question him about Iraq’s debts.”
It is noted that the Presidency of the Iraqi Parliament referred MP Youssef Al-Kalabi to the Parliamentary Conduct Committee on Tuesday, based on a request submitted by the head of the Reconstruction and Development parliamentary bloc, Bahaa Al-Araji, following statements made by Al-Kalabi inside the parliament building.
According to a document seen by Shafaq News Agency, Al-Araji asked the Speaker of Parliament to refer Al-Kalabi to the Parliamentary Conduct Committee, attaching a CD containing what the MP had said, considering that his statements included “clear abuse, transgression and false accusations” against the head of the Reconstruction and Development Alliance and former Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani.
The Reconstruction and Development bloc announced Monday, that it was suspending its attendance at the House of Representatives sessions, stipulating that legal measures be taken against the concerned deputy before resuming its participation.
The bloc said in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency that it had submitted an official memorandum to the Speaker of Parliament demanding that the MP be referred to the Parliamentary Conduct Committee, but it had not received, according to it, any practical measures, which prompted it to suspend its attendance at the sessions.
