Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Wednesday that it was “painful” when US President Donald Trump “sided” with the other side in the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia, after Trump said Zelensky should be replaced.

Zelensky said in an interview: “It is painful that Trump chooses one side… not our side,” adding that he doesn’t mind Trump being in the middle between Ukraine and Russia: “If you are in the middle, you should stay in the middle.”

When asked whether he felt betrayed by Trump, who earlier in the week called for a new Ukrainian president after agreeing to lift sanctions on Russian diesel exports, Zelensky replied, “Really, yes. But it’s a little more complicated than just my emotions or feelings.”

He stressed that he would not resign “under American pressure,” adding: “It is unfortunate that we are losing a strong partner.”

Zelensky also said: “We are not selling our country. This is not about business for us, it is simply our life, and this is our country.”

US President Donald Trump announced in a social media post last Sunday that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to a “ceasefire agreement in the energy sector,” but neither side has confirmed this.

While Zelensky last Friday described Trump’s decision to allow imports of Russian diesel fuel to lower prices as “weak,” Trump responded the following day by saying that Ukraine needed “a new president.”

However, the controversy did not end there, as Zelensky returned to emphasize that only Ukrainians choose their president.
