Kurdistan region, said on Thursday that its oil buyer told him that those purchases do not go to the United States as the region seeks to avoid tensions with the central government in Baghdad.
Baghdad has long opposed the independent oil exports from the region and managed to stop oil tankers bound for the US market several years ago.
But the central government softened its opposition Kurdish crude exports during the previous year while fighting the Baghdad and Erbil together the organization of the Islamic state.
The Minister of Natural Resources in the Kurdistan Regional Government Ashti Hawrami after media reports that Khama Kurds in the way to the US market for the first time since 2014 , “asked the buyer and received assurances of our oil that no shipments en route to the United States.”
It sells Erbil oil in Europe and Asia through trading companies as well as sell crude directly to Rosneft Russia but none of its oil did not reach the United States, a major export market for Baghdad.
When sailed through the oil tanker Neverland Gibraltar last week, carrying Khama Kurds on board appeared to be heading across the Atlantic Ocean.
Hawrami said “oil may be stored or moved to other places, but not the United States , ” he said , adding that the KRG sells its oil on FOB basis and then they do not deal directly with end buyers.
Hawrami said , “We have no intention to provoke the anger of Baghdad, is our policy to discuss and resolve problems and not causing new obstacles , ” he said , adding that the joint discussions on increasing production and exports, refining and electricity generation continues.
Hawrami said , “It is a constructive dialogue, the Prime Minister asked Haider al – Abadi to form a committee of cooperation with each other and hope to see them soon in Erbil for the new round of talks.”
