An informed source reported on Thursday that the leadership council of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) decided to withdraw from the regional government (the ninth cabinet), following disagreements over the legitimacy of the procedures that accompanied the session to reactivate parliament and elect its leadership.
The source told a correspondent for Shafaq News Agency that the leadership council of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) made this decision during its meeting dedicated to discussing recent political developments, particularly the repercussions of the Kurdistan Parliament session that was held without official participation from the PUK.
He added that the leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Bafel Talabani, is scheduled to announce shortly his party’s final position on reactivating parliament, and will clarify the nature of the decisions taken by the leadership council during its meeting.
Earlier today, informed sources revealed a change in the balance of power within the Kurdistan Region Parliament , following the participation of six MPs from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and the New Generation Movement blocs in the session to elect the parliament’s leadership, contrary to the two blocs’ position rejecting holding the session.
The Kurdistan Parliament resumed its work on Wednesday and elected its leadership for the sixth session, after nearly two years of disruption caused by political disputes that followed the region’s elections in October 2024.
The session was attended by 52 members out of 100, during which Vala Farid, from the Kurdistan Democratic Party, was elected Speaker of Parliament, Rami Nouri, representing the Christian component, was elected as her deputy, and Mona Kahwaji, representing the Turkmen component, was elected as Secretary of Parliament.
