The Kurdistan Democratic Party bloc, the Christian bloc, and the Turkmen Reform Party bloc called on Tuesday for other parliamentary blocs to hold a session on Wednesday morning to activate the Kurdistan-Iraq Parliament.
The head of the Kurdistan Democratic Party’s parliamentary bloc, Vala Farid, said in a joint press conference with members of parliament from the bloc that “because more than two years have passed since the elections, unfortunately, the regional parliament has not yet been activated to carry out its legislative duties and proceed with forming the Kurdistan Regional Government.”
For his part, the representative of the Christians in Erbil, Rami Nouri, said in a press conference he held with the representative of the Christians, James Hasdo: “We demand that the session be held tomorrow to be an extension of the first session that was held on December 12, 2024, so that we can elect the new Presidency of the Kurdistan Parliament.”
For her part, the head of the Turkmen Reform Party bloc, Mona Kahwaji, confirmed in a press conference: “We have submitted an official request to the Presidency of the Kurdistan Parliament to start holding the session tomorrow, Wednesday, to end the existing legal vacuum.”
Meanwhile, the Presidency of the Kurdistan Parliament called on all members of Parliament to attend the session scheduled to be held tomorrow, Wednesday, at 11:00 AM to complete the work of the first opening session of the sixth electoral term.
The session’s agenda includes completing the topics of the first session of the autumn legislative term of the first year of the sixth parliamentary session.
This move comes amid the continued political stalemate in the Kurdistan Region since its parliamentary elections on October 20, 2024, which resulted in the Kurdistan Democratic Party winning 39 seats, followed by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan with 23 seats, and the New Generation Movement with 15 seats, out of 100 seats.
Parliament held its first session on December 12, 2024, but political disputes prevented the completion of the procedures for electing its leadership and activating its legislative and oversight role, coinciding with the failure of negotiations between the Democratic Party and the National Union regarding the formation of the new government and the distribution of key positions.
The past period witnessed renewed moves to end the state of paralysis, as the Kurdistan Democratic Party called, on October 22, for the resumption of the first session and the election of the parliament’s leadership, stressing its readiness to participate without waiting for a comprehensive agreement on the formation of the government.
In contrast, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan insists on the necessity of reaching a comprehensive political understanding with the Democratic Party regarding the distribution of key positions in the region before resuming parliamentary sessions and electing its leadership.
