12-25-2014 Newshound Guru Adam Montana [Is the possibility of Shabibi coming back as the Central Bank Governor good or bad for our investment?] Shabs is a VERY smart man, and was very good at his job. If he were to come back to that position, the new GOI under Abadi is a different animal than what Shabibi had before. I don’t think Shabibi was the reason for Iraq not RVing – if anything, he was held back by Maliki. That is no longer the case, and I feel like Shabibi could be a major asset to an RV…. so I’m going to say his return would be a good thing for us, but his return is by no means necessary for progress. THE PRICE OF THEIR CURRENCY IS AS A PRODUCT. IT HAS TO BE PRICED FAIRLY AND SOLD HONESTLY. 12-19-2014 Newshound Guru Enorrste …the street rate and official rate must be within 2% of each other PRIOR to allowing Iraq to move from Article XIV to Article VIII. This is a fundamental pre-requisite to making that move to Article VIII… The fact that the CBI concurs that it is doing what is necessary to get into compliance is also very encouraging. To me this is an indication that we are “coming down to the wire.” I do not believe they will be allowed to move to Article VIII prior to completing the 90 days of stable currency. Having said that, however, I still hold out the very real possibility that they will begin the float prior to moving to Article VIII. This only makes sense, because, as I noted earlier, once they float the currency then the official rate and the street rate become identical. I am cautiously hopeful that the float could begin in mid or late January. Read more…

This cannot take place at the same time the float begins, but instead must occur AFTER the float has begun. I see no impediment to a float beginning in January or so…Once the banking laws are passed, and they are nearing completion on them as I write, then the CBI can begin the float, IMO.

It would be unlikely they would be doing this for a project that is 12 months or more away. Couple of things to remember…Iraq is in an urgent situation to create jobs, investment, stability, rebuild infrastructure, etc. etc. Opening the banking system to the world is key and a critical step that must happen “before” they will have success with all of that. They cannot sit idle for 12 months or more and hope to hold the economy in Iraq together, let along create stability…now is the time! As soon as the laws are in place, we will see the transition. This is probably the biggest news in months. Major implications here – all three presidencies agreed to remove the highest judge in Iraq…consequently, the most corrupt and one of Maliki’s main tentacles of influence (in the judiciary)…Medhat being gone pretty much seals Maliki’s fate – but on the positive side, it portrays Jubouri (a Sunni), Massoum (a Kurd), and Abadi (a Shia) all agreeing on what could be a contentious issue. They acted quickly and in solidarity…longterm – this looks not-so-good for Iran…great for Iraq. I will be shocked if Maliki stays out fo jail for 2 more weeks. This is a MAJOR shake-up. Read more…
