An informed political source stated on Wednesday evening that Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi’s visit to Syria achieved “important gains” for Iraq, especially in the security file, which was confirmed by MP Firas al-Muslawi, who added that the “Shia minority” will have a role in governing Syria.
The source told Shafaq News Agency that “Al-Zaidi’s visit to Syria achieved important gains for Iraq, the most important of which is controlling security and stability on the borders, where an understanding was reached to remove everything that could be a source of concern for Iraq.”
He noted that “the Iraqi army will take over the protection and security of the incomplete part of the security border wall that Iraq built to protect the country, in addition to other important security understandings.”
For his part, MP Firas Al-Muslawi, spokesman for the Reconstruction and Development Coalition, explained to Shafaq News Agency that “the results achieved from the Prime Minister’s visit to Syria today are a continuation of what former Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani started, especially in the security file and its positive impact on Iraq, as it removed dangers from the Iraqi-Syrian border.”
He added that “the results also included preserving the security of the Shiite minority in Syria and involving them in governance, in addition to protecting the Shiite shrines there.”
Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi arrived in the Syrian capital Damascus on Wednesday morning for an official visit during which he will meet with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa.
An informed source told Shafaq News Agency that Al-Zaidi will discuss bilateral relations and issues of common interest on the political, security and economic levels with officials in Syria.
This visit comes as a continuation of the regional tour that Al-Zaidi began in mid-October with an official visit to Saudi Arabia, before making a similar visit to Jordan on the 26th of the same month.
