Shafaq News/ The Parliamentary Oil Committee disclosed, on Monday, the details and materials of the draft oil and gas law, indicating that it is waiting for a “government notification” to discuss and vote on the final draft of the law in the Iraqi parliament.
Committee member Sabah Sobhi told Shafaq News agency, “The oil and gas law is one of the important laws that were mentioned in the ministerial curriculum of the government of Muhammad Shia’ al-Sudani,” noting that “approving the law will address the oil-related problems between Baghdad and Erbil and will be complementary to the existing political agreements that have an impact on them.” formed the current government.
He added, “The oil and gas law will depend on the constitutional articles of Articles 111, 112 and 115 of the constitution to solve the crisis and problems between the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government.”
And between Sobhi, “Axis No. 20 and 23 in the ministerial curriculum of the government, Muhammad Shia’a al-Sudani, includes the legislation of the oil and gas law to eliminate problems between the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government.”
A member of the Parliamentary Committee indicated, “We are awaiting a notification from the government to send the final draft of the oil and gas law to vote on the law in the Iraqi parliament.”
The heads of the federal government, Muhammad Shia al-Sudani, and the region, Masrour Barzani, agreed to resolve differences and outstanding issues, including the files of the financial budget for the year 2023 and the oil and gas law in accordance with the permanent constitution of the country.
This came during a meeting that brought them together in the capital, Baghdad, on 11/1/2023.
The two sides discussed, according to a statement issued by the regional government, the necessary steps to prepare a draft oil and gas law, according to what was stated in the political agreement of the parties that formed the government and the ministerial program.
The oil and gas law is still a matter of controversy in Iraq after talk of preparing for a new version of it, following signs of a dispute over its passage in light of the divergence of opinions about it within the coordination framework.
The oil and gas law, which has been stalled in the Iraqi parliament since its first session until today, is one of the most prominent points on which a preliminary agreement was reached between the two sides, but there are signs of disagreement that may affect the possibility of passing it.
