MP Bassem al-Gharabi affirmed on Friday that the current government and the presidency are committed to preserving Iraq’s sovereignty and not relinquishing Khor Abdullah, emphasizing that this waterway has been Iraqi for decades.
Al-Gharabi told Al-Maalouma News Agency that “UN Security Council Resolution 833 issued in 1993 was an unjust and unfair decision,” noting that “the subsequent agreement regarding Khor Abdullah was signed in an invalid manner inside the Iraqi parliament.”
He added, “The Federal Court decided to invalidate this agreement, describing the decision as a step in the right direction,” noting that “the Prime Minister’s Office and the President of the Republic announced their withdrawal from implementing this agreement.”
Al-Gharabi concluded his remarks by “emphasizing that this issue will be closely monitored to ensure the protection of Iraqi sovereignty in Khor Abdullah,” praising “the role of the Federal Court in making a just decision.”
