MP expects Parliament Speaker election session to be held at start of new legislative termShafaq News/ The MP of the parliamentary initiative bloc, Adnan Al-Juhaishi, expected, on Tuesday, that a session would be held to elect the parliament speaker, at the beginning of the new legislative session, and that the parliament’s recess would end next Wednesday.

Al-Juhaishi told Shafaq News Agency, “On July 9, the legislative holiday of the House of Representatives ends, and the new legislative session begins on July 10, which is next Wednesday.”

Al-Jahishi pointed out that “during the legislative recess, many meetings and discussions took place between the political forces to decide the position of the Speaker of the House of Representatives.”

He explained that “the Council will hold a session to elect the President at the beginning of the legislative session, after the political forces confirmed the decision to settle the position of the Parliament Speaker.”

On November 14, 2023, the Federal Supreme Court, the highest judicial authority in Iraq, decided to terminate the membership of Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi, following a lawsuit filed against him by MP Laith al-Dulaimi, in which he accused him of forging his (al-Dulaimi’s) resignation from the House of Representatives. As a result, the Federal Court ruled to terminate their membership (al-Halbousi and al-Dulaimi).

On November 21, 2023, the Iraqi Parliament decided to officially terminate the membership of Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi.

Since then and until last June, the House of Representatives held several sessions to elect a new Speaker of the House, but the differences between the Sunni political forces prevented this.
