The tunnel is 23 meters deep, under the Khor Al-Zubair navigation channel, with a water level of 12 meters above the section.

The company’s general manager, Farhan Al-Fartousi, told Shafaq News Agency, “The second piece that was installed in the submerged tunnel is 126 meters long and weighs 45,000 tons. It is equipped with advanced systems for balancing and steering, and helped lower the piece and connect it to the first section.”

He added, “The lowering of the two sections represents a significant step in the submerged tunnel, and their length has now reached 441 meters out of a total of 1,244 meters. This is a clear and noticeable advance in the work, and the work is being carried out to unprecedented international specifications in Iraq and the region using the submerged section method.”

On Monday, February 24, the General Company for Iraqi Ports announced that the company implementing the submerged tunnel project had begun installing flotation buoys, surveying towers, and GPS devices on the first section of the tunnel, in preparation for its unloading into the tunnel’s path in the Khor Al-Zubair navigation channel.

The company’s general manager, Farhan Al-Fartousi, told Shafaq News Agency at the time, “The installation of buoys, surveying devices, and GPS is intended to document and accurately determine the route. It is part of the necessary preparations to ensure the successful implementation of the submerged tunnel, which will contribute to increasing the capacity to receive goods passing through it under the Khor Al-Zubair Canal.”

He emphasized that “all technical aspects of the project are being carefully studied and monitored by the company’s engineers and the Italian consultant, given that this is the first project being implemented in the Middle East, and the calculations must be precise and error-free.”

It is noteworthy that Al-Fartousi confirmed in a previous press conference that work on the submerged tunnel will be completed by the end of this year.

The “submerged tunnel” is a vital project at the Grand Faw Port, located in southern Basra Governorate, and connects Faw to the Umm Qasr area in southern Iraq by sea.
