Members of the Kurdistan Parliament voted on Wednesday to elect the Kurdistan Democratic Party candidate, Vala Farid Ibrahim, as Speaker of Parliament, the representative of the Christian component, Rami Nouri Audish, as Deputy Speaker of Parliament, and the representative of the Turkmen component, Mona Nabi Nader, as Secretary of the Presidential Body.
A correspondent for Shafaq News Agency said that the parliament conducted a direct vote to choose the members of the presidential body, where Farid, her deputy and her secretary obtained an absolute majority of 52 votes.
This vote comes as the Kurdistan Parliament held its first session this morning to complete the procedures for electing a new leadership and to proceed with steps to form the new government in the region, more than two years after the legislative elections, amid a boycott by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan bloc and the New Generation Movement bloc.
Our correspondent explained that the session was held with the participation of the Kurdistan Democratic Party bloc, in addition to a number of deputies from other blocs, noting that the oldest member (from the New Generation Movement) refused to chair the session, so another deputy took over the management in order to achieve the legal quorum specified as (half + 1).
Vala Farid Ibrahim, who was born in Erbil in 1976, belongs to the Kurdistan Democratic Party. She was elected Speaker of Parliament in February 2019, becoming the first woman to hold this position in the history of the region. She then left in July of the same year to become the region’s Minister of Parliamentary Affairs in Masrour Barzani’s government, before returning to Parliament in its sixth session and assuming the leadership of the Kurdistan Democratic Party bloc.
As for Rami Nouri Audish Daniel, known as Rami Nouri Siavash, he is from the Chaldean Christian community. He was born in Baghdad in 1985 and won the Kurdistan Parliament elections in 2024 for the Christian quota seat in Erbil, becoming a member of the sixth session of Parliament.
In contrast, Mona Nabi Nader Abdullah, known as Mona Qahwaji, belongs to the Turkmen component. She was born in Erbil in 1978, entered the Kurdistan Parliament for the first time in 2013, and was re-elected in 2018, before assuming the position of Secretary of Parliament in February 2019, becoming the first Turkmen figure to enter the Parliament’s Presidency.
